I need new icons that look cooler and express sentiments that are missing from the current lineup.

Sadly I haven't the brainpower to approach either endeavor.

Someday I'm going to get [livejournal.com profile] hoshizora to make me a couple random icons, though, and some of you other people who seem to have the graphic design instincts that I am lacking. Sigh. I need to take a class again.

I'll take donations! (Of icons, I mean, not classes.)

Speaking of. I may lack the instincts, but I have the pickiness. This Wordpress theme sure seems pretty! Click on on the thumbnail to view it large. I'd never use it! See how it says "Theme Preview" at the top? Yeah, your blog title is doomed to forever be all crooked against the tags. AUGH. It makes me twitch!

I have to change my talktotheclouds.com theme; the damned theme I'm using keeps showing up elsewhere as iconic of Twitter, and that's irritating. So I need to find another theme.

I think this is basically the delicious pasta and butternut squash dish I had at the Academy of Sciences cafe with [livejournal.com profile] toratigris last month, but the chef threw in the cheese and stirred it quickly for a few moments in the hot pan before serving it. It was so, so, so good. I want to eat it right now. If you are vegetarian, I don't recommend trying this without substituting something for the pancetta--the savoriness and saltiness matched up with the sweetness of the squash is what really makes this. The note on the side there about chanterelle mushrooms might work for the savory note, plus maybe some bacon salt or smoked salt, veggie sausage or something.

I kind of think there was a little more seasoning in the dish I had, but maybe not. I should just try this recipe and see.

Went to the library to see which of the manga for Master's Thesis #2 they had, and ... um, they had Fruits Basket and nothing else. A couple of the other titles were checked out, a couple were on order, and the other stuff is simply not owned by the library. Ugh. DOOM.

However, the library once again just handed me a book I've been wanting to read. They have books for sale on racks out front, which is how I originally got Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell for 50 cents, and now I've got Grand Ellipse by Paula Volsky, which [livejournal.com profile] toratigris said I should read (and certainly looks like something I should have already read). It was face out and everything. So I'll read it somewhere during or after this pile of Naomi Novik and Tobias Buckell books.

Appalled to be developing a crush on Noel Fielding. His fashion sense is terrible. (And he's older than I am.)

So tired. Can't tell if it's allergies, being a wimp for whom 7.4 hours of sleep won't do, or coming down with the world's slowest-to-incubate cold.

Finally, this Gmail Notifier plugin for Firefox that I was so happy about because it can handle 3 accounts including Gmail for domains? Yeah, it just randomly stops working after it's been up for a while. ARRRRGH. It's become vital to my business to have a working Gmail notifier and I can't find one. It's driving me nuts, as the pirate with the steering wheel on his pants said. Yarrr.

EDIT: I just started making the playlist for this year's Halloween party. Um. Yeah.

I promise it'll be more entertaining than what we did last year. For one thing, I'll try to make some ROOM so that if there's videogaming in one room, there will be something else to do in another room.

my dream wouldn't end. I was supposed to meet [livejournal.com profile] toratigris in a certain neighborhood in whatever Japanese city I was in. I didn't identify it as Japan in the dream, but when I woke up I realized that it had to be, because the cafes I'd circled as lunch possibilities were from a magazine that was clearly Tokyo Walker or one of the other Walker magazines. We were supposed meet at the train station at 12:15, because it'd take about an hour to get into the city, but she hadn't showed up by 12:45, and whenever I called her phone I got a 23rd Century real estate agent. (23rd? I guess my brain thinks Japan lives in the future. Which they kinda do, in some ways. :P) Anyway, the dream got stuck in a loop there as I kept trying the phone. I HATE that. But I think it'd be fun to poke around Japan with [livejournal.com profile] toratigris.

Entirely outside of dream reality, but in actual Real Life, the [Name of City] Walker magazines are fun. The info on them is in very small chunks, so I could puzzle through Taipei Walker enough that I used it once to find a Wachifield shop in a trendy little area of Taipei I'd never been in before. As I recall, a big chunk of each issue is devoted to restaurants and cafes, usually by theme (like "crepes" or "spicy" or "romantic." There are a few lines of text, several color photos of the place's specialties, and--best of all--a little inset map showing you how to get there and the nearest train/subway station is. Super useful as well as fun to browse. I don't think I can articulate how this is critically different from the restaurant listings in the Metro or whatever, but somehow it is.

I dunno. Here, have some Spider-man ramen.

Not Exactly a Lea Hernandez Tribute Not Exactly a Lea Hernandez Tribute
but I did think of some of her cute characters when I spontaneously carved it this evening while being very lonely and bored. Her name is Jill, and she bites.

Well, I think it's kind of cute, though certainly not up to [livejournal.com profile] divalea's standards of awesome. But if Neil Gaiman can get random pumpkin-tributes, then so can Lea, right? Right.

As it turns out, being lonely and bored on Halloween was probably the best feature of the day. I'm going to miss [livejournal.com profile] assaultdoor's grandmother a lot.

Or someone hacked her website.

In case they fix it, here's what I saw: )

Googling reveals that this excerpt is from "the TalkingBook version of Terence McKenna's 'True Hallucinations.'" Right then.

Carry on!

(thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nyxie for making my day a little more surreal.)

Wait, the John Galt Corporation is the "troubled contractor" company that's supposed to be demolishing the Deutsche Bank Building in New York?

For starters, it starred Viggo Mortensen, and while I like/respect him as an actor and person, I'm not a fangirl of his like many of you are. So I wasn't even all excited that he showed up playing a character in my dream.

Secondly, it was some kind of supernatural-tinged western. I don't really seek out supernatural-tinged westerns in any form--not games, books, or movies.

Thirdly, it had an excellent plot seed in it THAT STILL MADE SENSE WHEN I WOKE UP AND THOUGHT ABOUT IT.

This would all be fine and dandy if, you know, I could write fiction. Oh, I think I have a few minor skills and I can turn out a vignette or two, but I can't actually write a story. It's like wanting to be a portraitist and having a great sense of color, but no anatomy or perspective or layout skills.

Hrmph.

7-11s turned into Kwik-E Marts. One of the 11 stores to be totally converted into a Kwik-E Mart is not far away, in Mountain View. We might have to go. ([livejournal.com profile] pixiebell620, there's one in Dallas, too.) Exact locations are supposed to be up on July 2.

The Science that Matters feed ([livejournal.com profile] stmfeed) hiccuped and is working now. It's pretty interesting. Among the hiccuped-up posts is one that claims the oft-repeated "ideal waist-hip ratio of .70" is unjustifiable, and another one that says the famous Pygmalion effect doesn't exist, at least not as claimed (children randomly ID'd as intellectually ready to "bloom" were supposedly found to do better by the end of the year).

I have a tic, I guess, in the muscle between the base knuckle of my index finger and the webbing of my thumb. It's causing my index finger to twitch visibly and very, very irritatingly (and sometimes my thumb does, too). It's been going on for a few days and it's really driving me nuts.

Also, random new icon, from a very odd manga called "Iono-sama Fanatics."

Short cuts

  • Dangit, I have to swear off maguro and toro.

  • Continued reasons to not use antibacterial cleansers unless absolutely necessary. Few people using these actually need to be.

  • I had no plans to go to the Alameda County Fair this year, but they're going to have Herman's Hermits, so I guess we're going. *G* ([livejournal.com profile] assaultdoor is a fan.)

  • A friend is being essentially harassed by a phone survey group. One caller actually told him that if he didn't answer their questions, they would call back the next day. Surveys are explicitly not included in the Do Not Call registry. They've called on 4 days so far. He lives in California. Does he have any non-spendy recourse?

  • Holy cow, I'm not a student anymore. o_O

Pwned. (haxberdashery?!!)
Seems to me that Her Majesty was outdone in the haberdashery department. (Never mind the historical overtones.) Brought to my attention and suggested for labeling by [livejournal.com profile] jennifermward and [livejournal.com profile] assaultdoor. (Original from Day in Pictures at SFgate.com)
