Well, if one of you is a budding web designer looking to get more exposure*, I Found Your Camera is looking for a web designer to help them as they move over to WordPress.

It's such a cool concept for a site. I wish my digital camera from my first trip to Asia were still out there somewhere that I could find it...I don't have a picture of the penguin-shaped dumplings in the egg-white glacier from the dumpling restaurant in Chengdu, or lots of other things. Sigh.

*that was an accident.

Icon memoid via [livejournal.com profile] vaulted_eel.
1. Reply to this post, and I will pick six of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

(Copying herself, if you only have six icons but want to play, I'll pick like... three or so. I'm also copying her formatting WITH NO SHAME.)

1.
KEYWORDS:ringo-music-me
WHY I HAVE IT: For talking about music, and because I respect Shena Ringo even when I occasionally can't get what she's doing, and because I love the dichotomies in this image (making it well-suited for my weird musical tastes)
WHO MADE IT: I did, but it was mostly just cropping and enhancing.

2.
KEYWORDS: secularism-octopus-me
WHY I HAVE IT: [livejournal.com profile] tikistitch found this image warning of the EVIL OCTOPUS-LIKE THREAT OF SECULARISM!!!! I found it hilarious, and even though I only rarely bust it out, as a big fan of secularism, it was a must-have. (Governmental secularism is a good thing for religious and non-religious people alike!)
WHO MADE IT: I was feeling very lazy and ran it through [livejournal.com profile] lechatron's El Jay Iconmaker.

3.
KEYWORDS: gokusen-me
WHY I HAVE IT: I enjoyed the "Gokusen" manga and TV show about an apparently meek and dorky Yakuza-clan-head's granddaughter trying to make it on the straight-and-narrow as a high school teacher in charge of a class full of reprobates. This image took a ton of processing (it was upside down and had stuff in the background I had to edit out), and I added the text (which says GOKUSEN) myself. I also like her massive yet subtle bitchface in this. <3
WHO MADE IT: Me! Source image from onemanga.com

4.
KEYWORDS: get fuzzy-footnotes-me
WHY I HAVE IT: For discussing academia and writing and stuff. This is one of my oldest icons, I think. It's from "Get Fuzzy."
WHO MADE IT: I did! I think I had to re-arrange the text, maybe edit the wall, but I don't remember.

5.
KEYWORDS: murata-ono no komachi-me
WHY I HAVE IT:For being depressed, momentarily or not, and expressing that sense of things fading away. It quotes the beginning of a poem by Ono no Komachi: "Hana no iro wa/utsuri ni keri na..." (The colors of the flowers have already faded away...here's the whole thing in English; it's very short).
WHO MADE IT: The art is by Range Murata. I can't remember if the fade to the left is original or not. I added the text.

6.
KEYWORDS: whelan-shelves-sarudy
WHY I HAVE IT: The figure reminds me of me a little, and there are so many possible interpretations of what's going on. Is it a library? an office? a prison? a museum? Is she escaping? Researching? Daydreaming? Looking for someone? Sneaking in? Sometimes this icon just inexplicably fits a mood and a post.
WHO MADE IT: The art is by Michael Whelan and [livejournal.com profile] sarudy made the icon. (Thank you!)

(That was fun, so if you have a question about some other icon, by all means...)

If you can see a totally random post in Japanese (taken from an e-mail I already sent, so ... yeah) prior to this one, then you're on the Japanese filter. If you don't want to be, you should comment on that post and say so.

If you can't see it and do want to be on the filter, although it's very rarely used, you should comment here and say so.

I keep meaning to use it more, for practice, but ...

http://www.creebobby.com/timestable.html x http://co.ntagio.us/eljay/iconmaker/ = OTP?

Actually I have no idea.

But each cell is pretty close to 100 x 100. So if you've been wanting a Lincoln T. Rex, Vampire Robot, or Zombie Ninja icon, it's your lucky day. Just follow the correct lines on the matrix there, and then make an icon.

When you change mechanics/car repair places, should you/are you supposed to/is it good to go get any repair records from the place you're leaving? and will they give them to you? I've never done this before :P

We were just in a new Indian restaurant down the street, watching music videos, and one began, somewhat surprisingly, with a shot of the Forbidden City and a bunch of guys in vaguely historical-looking Chinese armor, led by a South Asian guy also in Chinese-looking armor. (I have seen CG aliens, and real pyramids, and most of Europe, and Rio, and gothic bondage lesbian dance clubs, but this was new.)

"PLEASE LET THEM START DANCING BOLLYWOOD-STYLE," I said.

And they did! And my day was made.

This scene was followed shortly by a bunch of South Asian and Chinese dancers in Tang-dynasty-ish dresses, and then a whole 1930s Shanghai cheongsam-and-suits-with-bowlers dance scene, and then a whole 1990s-2000s urban-Chinese-youth scene, all fronted by Bollywood stars.

Unfortunately, I can't find that video, but you can see bits of the scenes in this trailer:

As a bonus to make up for its relative lack of dancing randomness, it contains a potato with the face of Ganesha.

GLEE.

(I totally don't have an icon for this.)

- Virtual Hanami: a timelapse (?) video of a day's worth of cherry-blossom viewing in Kyoto, ending with that famous weeping cherry tree, all lit up at night, that I unwittingly took a photo of during our honeymoon because I thought it looked cool (but it had bare branches with crows perched on them at the time!). Can't be embedded. HD is a plus for viewing (took a while to load, though). Cheesy music likely a minus (is that a MIDI file?).

- I may not post this on Facebook as I think it's a repost from either here or there, but "This is Japan" photo-montage-video (...that's not really a time-lapse!) with the really repetitive piano music is still pretty cool (brief nudity warning, as photos of walls of porn videos are included). But, dear photographers, can you tell me how to get this kind of color in my photos? Is it something I can do? I've been crushing on this kind of look lately. I don't know why. I have some theories about how it's done but I would love some pointers. There are a few shots where I think it might be a bit too yellow, but anyway.

- remanence: variance - -an ACTUAL time-lapse video of several days in Tokyo. Click on the HD button to switch to the normal view if this takes too long to load, but for full effect, you should really just double-click on the video to watch it at Youtube, and view it on HD and full-screen, because it's very pretty despite the watermark.

I like the tones of some of the photos in this, too, but they're harder to pick up on. (And these photos I posted previously. I don't have the visual vocabulary to describe what's going on with the colors or the processing. HELP.)

- Stereographics/Small Planets/Ultra Fisheye photos of places in Japan; a Flickr set that I love unduly.

- World Sand Sculpture Festival in the Tottori Dunes, Japan's own mini-sandy-desert. The theme was "fairy tales and legends" this year. I'd rather see the Hokkaido snow festival, but this is kinda neat.

大きな箱とねこ: Big Box and Cat. It's a cat, trying to and eventually succeeding at jumping in, and out of, a box. That's pretty much it. Does what it says on the tin.

Maru <3.

(Unrelatedly, I had always wondered how a Japanese restaurant could call itself something like Wagamama and be any good, but if Maki says it isn't, I'll take her word for it. (Even for Asian fusion it's no good, she says.)

Her recipes at justhungry.com and justbento.com are excellent, by the way.)
wintersweet: Main character from Yokohama Shopping Project: Just being alive means you've made a clear profit. ☆ 人生、生きちょるだけで丸儲け. (chii-yayyayyay!-me)
Last Starfighter (C. wanted it...)
Dangerous Beauty (I haven't seen it since that night I was stuck in the hotel at DFW on the way back from Bangkok and literally stayed up all night due to jet lag, but even if it's not as interesting as I remember it being, it's still cool that they made a movie based on an academic nonfiction book about a Venetian courtesan!)
The Cat Returns (Borders' ridiculous half-off sale)
Top Secret
The Producers
Grosse Pointe Blank (finally!)
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (Extra Frills Edition)
(a mix of used and new)

Also games, mostly old but one new version of an old game: Disgaea DS, Phantom Brave, Steambot Chronicles, and Chocobo Tales.

Lest you think I've gone insane, pretty much everything was $3-$9, except Disgaea, which was C.'s dating-anniversary present and was full price. And I don't expect we'll buy any more movies or games for a while!

Target also had several movies for $4.75, but I didn't buy anything. I did teach my Japanese friend the meaning of the phrase "silver lining," though. (As in "Every recession has a...")

I'm as surprised as anyone, though.

Nooo!

I guess the economy in Japan really IS bad! Never mind Nigeria, here comes Nihon!

Dearest Fellow,

I am writing you this letter with courage though I have not considered this medium to be the best manner to have approached you on this issue being that the easiest communication has been abused over the recent years by some unhonest fellows, but I have no option than communicating with you by E-mail firstly.

However, My name is MR. UTAMURO TASUKU a contractor from Japan and native of Shizuoka, I want someone with a big heart ready to take decisions for me on Investment Project, despite the challenging economic conditions. the statistics shows that some countries Economy are still better and more profitable. I am interested to invest in your country through your acceptance. I am in Hong Kong now with the Sum of Forty Five Million Eight Hundred Thousand US Dollars ($45.8M) that I would like to invest in your country through your full cooperation, possibly because of my present health situation.

I made this money through a contract awarded to me by the Ministry of Petroleum during the renovation/expansion of KAWASAKI REFINERY IN KANAGAWA JAPAN and I am not safe if I go back to Japan because I did not finish the contract because of circumstances and my health possition, I hope you will understand my situation and assist me to invest this money properly as this is my only hope.

Please kindly write me back for more explanations.

Best regard's,

MR. UTAMURO M. TASUKU.

(Oddly enough the return address is Russia and the syntax is the same as the Nigerian ones...)

A roundup of anonymized comments from professors (mostly) regarding the effects of budget cuts on their own universities, colleges, and departments:

(Tomorrow's Professor is a great blog, by the way.)

Just thought it might be interesting (for really depressing values of "interesting").

Crossposted to [livejournal.com profile] antiacademia and probably Facebook, sorry.

TO: Male commenters on a certain science blog
Re: Conversation about a female postdoc's query about what to do regarding her discomfort over being called "dear" repeatedly by a male professor

PROTIP: Nobody cares that YOU don't mind when female colleagues and superiors call YOU "dear." Inverting a historically unequal power relationship IS NOT THE SAME GODDAMNED THING.

Thanks for playing!

(In other news, it totally doesn't bother me when Indian people wear kilts.* Tell your friends.)

(God.)

(*You know that was sarcasm, right? Actually, I would find it delightful, but it has no bearing at all on any OTHER matter.)

Oh yeah, I made an openID account at Dreamwidth.org, because there does seem to be a certain critical mass -- with all the other LJ alternatives I've seen, none have ever crossed as many different friend-groups as this one has, so I'm willing to entertain it as a possible long-term backup. And I might be interested in a code for a full account, but I don't know. I have a permanent account here, and if I were to leave LJ for good, it would be for a less restrictive, controlled-by-me platform such as self-hosted Wordpress, the same way I host Readable Blog and Talk to the Clouds. Those services are not only vastly more powerful than LJ-based pseudo-blogging services, they're also free to me--I can add as many as I want as subdomains (or I can register new domain names, and those are $9.95 a year--I have unlimited bandwidth and storage space). Dreamwidth has all of LJ's tiresome display and control limitations, and if it winds up not preserving the only feature of LJ (all my friends are here), then meh.

So ... yeah.

Who knows. In three months I may think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
