Had a lot of fun tonight playing an indie/alternative roleplaying game, "In a Wicked Age," which I confess I was skeptical about playing. I don't really like swords and sorcery, and I've had mixed results with the more freeform "interactive storytelling"-type games, and I was really scared about a game that encourages you to have goals that conflict with other players.

Actually, all of these elements worked really well, even the part where my goals and [livejournal.com profile] ext_4728's conflicted and we were actively working against each other. It was actually fun and rewarding instead of stressful. That's one of those things that's sometimes fun for other people in games, but never has been for me--I get a totally real adrenaline response but in a bad way. Tonight was fun, though, which was a first. (I'm sure it didn't hurt that I prevailed, but I think it would have been fun even if I hadn't. Having our goals written down and being able to fall back and focus on that was very helpful.)

Of course, it helps a lot that [livejournal.com profile] ext_4728 is so nice and easygoing.

Anyway, thanks to D. for picking out and running that even though I wasn't enthused. [livejournal.com profile] assaultdoor's character was fun, too.

I'm looking forward to playing these characters again--and to the inevitable awkward conversation between Lieutenant Bellclaire (me) and Captain Trevors ([livejournal.com profile] ext_4728).

ARGHWANTTORUNGAME.

More on that later...

D. also suggested Spicy Town (yes!) for dinner, and although I had seen not-so-good Yelp reviews, it was VERY good non-Americanized spicy Sichuan stuff, and we'll be back. The lamb with cumin was awesome, and the ground pork with pickled green beans was good too. The decor is really nice as well. Do not take your sweet-and-sour-pork-eating friends here (odds are the only things they'll recognize on the menu are potstickers, mapo tofu, and maybe twice-cooked pork).

Bird ID?

Bird ID? Bird ID?

Can anybody ID this bird for me? I haven't bought a bird book yet for California, though I need to. We went outside for a short walk during the break in the rain today and the birds were out in force! Usually we don't see a lot, but they're there. Sorry the photo's so bad, but these guys were hopping around like mad, they wouldn't sit still for more than a split second, and I couldn't get close. They're smaller than a sparrow and mostly grey. Their bellies are lighter than it looks here, due to shadow, and the yellow spot isn't that intensely colored (due to Photoshop trying to get any details to show up at all). They have that yellow-orange spot that you can see, and *maybe* another bit of yellow on the tail or rump (not sure).

My best guess from whatbird.com is a Hutton's vireo, but maybe [livejournal.com profile] miwasatoshi has a better guess. I do have a couple other photos from slightly different angles. :/

"Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast" is such an awful, hackneyed attempt at ripping off 80s-era AC/DC or something that I actually got angry at it while playing it (causing me to miss several beats).

I know I complain that modern rock no longer contains decent guitar solos or anything, but for crying out loud. BLECHHH.

By the way, can anyone explain why the guitar tends to emit feedback-sounding noise that isn't the missed-note noise and doesn't correlate to [livejournal.com profile] assaultdoor missing a note? It even happens when he hasn't missed any notes in an entire song. He thinks it correlates to the multiplier getting reset (down), but I don't know. I don't think it's a mechanical problem; I think it's supposed to mean something, but we don't know what.
