New Year's Card
New Year's Card
In China, plum/ume blossoms symbolize the persistence and endurance of beautiful things despite adversity, since they bloom while there is still snow on the branches.* In Japan, ume is also traditionally held to ward off evil. So I think it's a good image to keep in mind for the new year. [KAJITA, Hanko (1870-1917) "Ume" (Plum)]

*That's my interpretation of the symbolism anyway.

Something I really need to do this year is post more in my blogs for students (readableblog.com) and teachers (talktotheclouds.com). Sigh. I did manage a post at http://www.talktotheclouds.com/ -- it's really just that video you may have seen a year or so ago from TED in which Erin McKean talks about the dictionary. It's pretty good, though.

Sorry the LJ's been even more dull than usual. Things should be back to normal in a few days when we're back in California. I haven't accomplished anything on my thesis while I've been gone, either. I have to buckle down right away when we get back. Gah.
