Oh, swine flu. I haven't mentioned it because of course it's in my region! Who expected it wouldn't be? It's a couple of elementary schools near my husband's college, and some of his students have kids in elementary school and some of them are young enough to have siblings in school. We're washing our hands and carrying on.

I had gotten the impression that it was some kind of mystery as to why people from Mexico were dying from the disease and people from the US weren't, but ... errrr ... maybe not? Egads.

The best explanations I've read as to why it's more fatal in Mexico are 1) underreporting of mild flu cases in general, meaning that the fatality rate is lower than we see now and 2) something called a cytokine storm, which hits you harder and deadlier the stronger your immune system is. Americans in general have very underutilized immune systems because of, well, hygiene and food safety standards.

So according to the cytokine storm theory, we should be watching the South American data most closely...?

Yes, the cytokine storm theory is the theory from the 1918 pandemic. Who knows. We'll find out eventually.

I'm kinda confused about this, because on the one hand people are saying 'global pandemic' but on the other it seems that human-to-human transmission is a 1-in-1,000 event - I've only heard of one case to date where someone got sick without having been to Mexico. Am I missing something?

With that pattern, though, I still doubt Mexican healthcare is to blame - there are few countries in the world where the poor are routinely pumped full of antivirals, even if they do have a nasty cough (probably not even here). More likely Mexican pigeons....
